The Thirteenth Tier is a lecture-performance which considers the parallels between classical dynamics and thermodynamics, and the concepts of the Eternal Return and the Will to Chance. Facilitated by a series of “educational” videos, S. E. Creaghan, in the role of the Interlocutor, examines the ways in which select video pieces secrete or absorb matter and energy, and the moments they undergo entropy or are subject to what is known as the arrow of time. The overall goal is to unearth this Thirteenth Tier in the videos as well as in our lives, and the ways in which we can both embrace and embody this radical element.
Stephanie E. Creaghan is a multidisciplinary artist who makes work about how violence presents itself in communication, combining different forms of language (visual/audio/spatial/temporal) to reveal latent forms of manipulation. Their first major solo exhibition, Hideous Intimacies, was presented at Pangée (Montreal) in 2019. Recent exhibitions and works include Soleil-astre, soleil-arbre, a public sculpture installed at Outremont Park (Montreal), and The Dailies at the Cinémathèque québécoise (Montreal) in 2023.
